Small Talk
Constantly made fun of for this, I have a series of questions that I keep in my head, ready to make small talk with anyone new who I meet. "What are your hobbies?", "Do you have any pets?, and the simple question of "How are you doing?" are among them. Though polite speech and small talk may be looked down upon by many, it is a crucial part of society in order to ensure that proper relations exist between people.
Every Monday and Thursday, I go to work in a professional environment at a large office as a receptionist. Sitting at a desk in the lobby, I have very little interaction with the other employees within the company. Though I may not have physical contact with many people, every ten minutes, the phone rings, I pick up the phone and ask the exact same question, "Good afternoon, how may I direct the call?" Oftentimes, I have to use what we all call "small talk" and speak over the phone asking people 'how their day is going' or that 'they can call back at any time'. Just in our everyday life, it's obvious the impact that taking out this polite speech from these conversations can make. The way that it holds up just simple things like our conversations between employees or customers, in order to maintain proper relations between the world.
Simply stated, the way that polite speech exists in the professional community makes it such an important part of communication as a whole, though it may be looked down upon by the 'normal' part of society.
