live from new york... it's saturday night.
Humorists form an outlet in which those frustrated with society enjoy comedy through a satirical view of the harshest topics throughout our society.
Take Saturday Night Live for example. Over and over again, the show is criticized by conservatives for being politically driven and insulting to the government. But for the millions of viewers who tune in every Saturday night and watch viral clips floating around on twitter, the pure satire found in this show can make an audience burst into laughter with its cheesy accents, overexaggerated costumes and views on current issues. Now, I don't watch SNL that often, but the week after watching the democratic debate, I somehow end up watching the SNL version. Bursting into laughter over the impressions of both my favorite and least favorite presidential candidates, the satirical view the show takes on some of the important issues in American politics is my favorite comedy. Though many think that making fun of things like sexual assault allegations against Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg's disapproval among African-Americans is inappropriate, finding the humor in these things is often the only way to garner attention to them. The millions who watched that clip may have laughed at the scene, but they are also shocked by the truth behind the humor.
It''s often hard to point out the simple flaws within people, but humorists play a crucial role in society in educating the public through an outlet which aims to entertain as well as educate. Much which is satirically discussed through comedy is shocking or inappropriate to say in any other situation, further highlighting the need for humorists who reach deeper into these topics.

I really liked how you're able to identify with how difficult it is to point out flaws because through the exaggeration and absurdity of such skits, these exact flaws are highlighted.
ReplyDeleteI like how you used SNL for your humorist example. I agree with your claim that they should reach deeper into the topics that they discuss in their show.
