home is where the heart is
Living with divorced parents, I often experience confusion when telling someone that I live in two different places. Lucky for me, and rare for the situation, I have the privilege of having one house to call home. Having a home is often taken for granted, many don't realize its importance until it's taken from you. Especially for my overly-controlling tendencies, having one place which belongs to ME makes all the difference. In A Raisin in the Sun, this can be compared to Mama, whose life's work and ambitions is creating a proper home for her family. Her dream, since she and her husband got married, is to provide for her family. She honors this dream and her late husband, by using the money from his life's work to provide a house for her family. Throughout the story, it's clear that nothing will be able to stop her.
When looking at Mama, despite the many differences, I see my own mother in her actions. Working, helping people, to provide for me the things she never had. A stable family, a home for me to come home to every day and a loving face to support me unceasingly. Mama's words of elation when finally buying the house of her dreams really hit home (pun intended). "It’s just a plain little old house—but it’s made good and solid—and it will be OURS." The emotion of decades of working towards her dreams is laced within these words. Moving as a family, the significance of the culmination of both Mama and her husband's work has finally achieved the American Dream.
Haha, there really is no place like home... It's really nice that the Younger family found a place they can call home... I liked that you interpreted that as achieving the oh-so-impossible American Dream. I feel like A Raisin in the Sun gave a more hopeful ending on being capable of reaching the American Dream.
ReplyDeleteI love how you chose a piece of the book that you connected with. The quote you chose really does represent her dream. Especially since it is one that is built with the right foundations and values. Also I like how you brought up the sacrifices that Mama and her husband made. The fact that Walter senior's indusrance money was used to buy the house shows how any dream is not possible without the sacrifices of previous generations.
ReplyDeleteaww parvathi this was really touching. I really hope your mom sees this blog post. i think another reason the idea of a house is so sentimental is because it's something mama wants to pass down to her children: so it's not only a physical place where they can reside in and make memories in, but it's also a legacy of hers (and her husband's) as well
